Today’s photo Friday is a bittersweet one. My opa passed away on Thursday. His health has been fading and I’m so grateful that he is out of pain and that I got a chance to say goodbye. He was a wonderful grandfather and we will all miss him. He and I always had an understanding. He never questioned my living abroad for so long and always wanted to hear about my next great adventure. Since I’m the only granddaughter on that side of the family, he had a bit of a sweet spot for me 🙂 Of course he loved all his grandsons as well. He easily accepted the gentleman as a new grandson in the family when we got married. I’m so happy I was able to know my opa for as long as I did. He had a full life of adventures, travel, farming and family. He loved John Deere tractors and loved having four daughters. He was a tall, strong man but there was always tenderness in his eyes.
Goodbye opa, rest in peace

So the gentleman turned 33 this year 🙂 I made him a cake. It was really really ridiculously good! A friend from work passed on the recipe and so I thought I’d pass it on to you…So here goes:

Black Russian Cake:

1 box yellow cake
1 lg. box instant chocolate pudding
1/2 cup sugar
4 eggs
1 cup oil
3/4 cup water
1/4 cup Kahlua
1/4 cup vodka

bake 350 degrees in a bunt pan for 45-50 minutes

cool 10 minutes

invert, poke holes, drizzle 1/2 cup Kahlua and 1 cup powdered sugar.

new loves… February 16, 2009

So in honor of Valentine’s Day, I thought I’d mention a few things I’ve discovered that I like this weekend 🙂

1. Idyllwild in winter – I’ve been there before in the spring but we went there this weekend and it was awesome! (more to come on this topic – above picture is from there)

2. Knee deep snow – very very fun to play in as long as a hot shower is near

3. The new Fray CD – The gentleman bought it for me for Valentine’s Day, it’s pretty freaking awesome!

4. Cheddar Jalapeño Cheetos – I think I might even like these better than flamin’ hot cheetos

5. Seeing movie stars in public – Kind of makes me feel excited but then feel dumb for feeling excited but then excited that I snuck a picture. (See this coming photo Friday for details)

Happy Valentine’s weekend – hope it was happy!

Happy Anniversary to us!!! November 10, 2008

Well, it’s been a year of fun and excitement. Partly it feels like we’ve been married forever, not in a bad way of course, but because we know each other so well and are so comfortable together. The other part of me feels like it’s gone by so fast and there are still days where I suddenly remember I’m married and it’s a little shocking. I guess 1 year of being married doesn’t undo a mindset of 25 years of not being married (does that makes sense?). But seriously, we’ve had so much fun together and I really appreciate the family and friends who have supported us and love us and pray for us.

So, yay us! 1 year and still going! I guess it’s not that much of an accomplishment compared to 50 years but still, it’s exciting to us!

Soon I’ll post pics from our anniversary weekend, wahoo!

So last week (the 11th i think) we finally got to shoot a wedding with a photo booth!! Yippee! We had a photo booth at our wedding and it was a hit. So at this wedding (since we were working and all) we told the guy we’d “do the test run” before all the guests started using it.

So we edited the best 4 together and here they are!

Like how professional we look in our all black attire?? 🙂

So, here goes:

This is a more recent photo of some flowers I cut from my very own dahlia plant. I love dahlias and the gentleman bought me this plant about 4 months ago. Now, the months are very important because I have a black thumb. I get it from my mom…she’s killed ever plant/flower she’s ever gotten unless my dad planted it. He has a green thumb on the other hand and is practically Martha Stuart with his garden in the backyard (of course my mom gets all the compliments for it since she’s a female so she MUST have a garden)
Anyway, I’m very proud to say that I’ve kept this plant alive for about 4 months. Jared has probably given me about 5 or 6 potted flowers since we’ve been together and they have all sadly perished except for this one. Not only has it survived this long, but it grew flowers consistently for a couple months and I was able to cut them and put fresh flowers in my house! So, I don’t know if the survival of this plant is because I’m finally learning how to take care of plants or because this dahlia will survive through whatever I do (or not do) to it. Either way, it gives me hope and though it may seem like a small acheivement, it’s a big one to me 🙂 Someday, when I have my own house (not rented I mean) I would love to have a garden including flowers and vegetables and herbs. I’ve been trying to be intentional about what I eat lately and having fresh veges right there in my backyard would help I think. Well, we’ll see!

The Queen Mary March 18, 2008

Filed under: adventure,family,love,plus a little extra...,story,to see — plusalittleextra @ 3:41 pm

So this past weekend, I took the gentleman to stay on the Queen Mary for a late bday present since we’ve been so busy. I had visited it (along with the Spruce Goose) when I was a kid but never knew that they turned it into a hotel! Apparently it’s haunted, so then we HAD to go there! And of course all we did all evening was run around taking pictures 🙂

We were bad…there weren’t a lot of people out at night and we found a few open gates that I assume were meant to be closed since all the rest were and we climbed some stairs I assume weren’t meant to be climbed 🙂 We looked inside those big smoke stacks. There was nothing in them but junk, it was boring, but dark so it freaked me out a little…haha.

And the gentleman has been growing out his beard…isn’t it amazing?? He’s been called: “Chuck Norris”, “A Terrorist”, and “Distinguished”… Maybe he’s a distinguished
terrorist, did anyone think of that!!

Then we ran around The Ports of Call and had a yummy lunch watching the seals swim by.

All in all, it was a good little getaway. Everyone needs to get away even for just a day and a night. Anyway, we recommend staying at the Queen Mary. You might not get a good night’s sleep though, the walls are thin and their generators run all night. But we didn’t see any ghosts, haha. Someone’s alarm clock went off at 5am but there wasn’t anyone staying in that room so we called to have them get someone to turn it off. Of course things like that don’t get fixed easily. The guys were on their walkie talkies trying to open the room. Someone’s keys didn’t work, they couldn’t find the other guy. I swear, how does anything ever get done!! So around 5:45 we were finally able to go back to sleep. Oh well. If things like that didn’t happen, how would we ever appreciate efficient and competent people? Plus, it’s just fun to laugh at later…

and finally….We’re changing our business name. It’s now and always going to be SidebySide Video. We had too many problems with the other name and website so we’re going with this. The site is easier now. (we’re updating it so look back soon to see the new site with videos!) and the new blog is:

One year ago, I would have never guessed the way things would be…la jolla – taken on our 2nd date

and now, a year later celebrating our very first Valentine’s Day together. I’ve done the most random, unromantic things on that day throughout my life and have always considered it ‘just another day’ but for once, I got to be totally sucked into it, be a giddy girl, get flowers and be loved by an awesome guy…and then celebrate one year together. What a year! First date to marriage, how crazy and awesome is that? God is woodson – taken on our 1 year anniversary
